Chapter 6

1) chapter 6 66-74
2) In chapter 6 we learn much more about James Gatz's or Jay Gatsby, past. Jay Gatsby was created when he saw Cody's yacht and decided he wanted the same wealth and life. He met this wealthy man who took interest into Jay, and took him to the west indies. Living with Dan Cody, Jay realized he was a drunk and he always was moving from place to place. When Dan died, he was set to gain his inheritance of 25000 dollars but Ella Kaye took it away from him. Then Jay Gatsby throws another party where Daisy and Tom attend. These east egger's look down upon the west egg society Jay is a part of. Jay is also quick to pick up on the fact that Daisy, wasn't enjoying herself. We get an incite into Daisy, by her description of the actor and director, and how she only enjoys the action not the emotion behind the gesture. Finally while, Nick and Jay are talking, we see Gatsby determination to have things just as they were before, 5 years ago, with loving Daisy.
3)
a) Jay Gatsby
b)"The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself" (p.64)
c)
Gatsby is a man of luxuries and shows off his material wealth. As he develops through the story his character is skewed by his actions of shady business deals, and his never ending love for Daisy. Jay Gatsby is the alter ego of, James Gatz who really was a blue collar american. His obsessive personality leads him to strive for success and wealth in order to win back the women he loves Daisy Buchanan.
d)
Before Jay Gatsby was a mysterious man who we were inclined to like. As the story unfolds and more details are revealed about his motives it becomes clear of his motives of emotion and romantic ideals. In chapter 6 Jay Gatsby roll begins to take a turn. Jay has created all this allusion around him, it has begun to crumble. Reality is setting in after chapter 6 for Jay because he is beginning to realize his love for Daisy, wont work. She doesn't fit into his lifestyle and she doesn't care about his emotions, she only enjoys the chase. However with Jay's obsessive personality he doesn't give up and still determined to make things as they were 5 years ago when he met Daisy.
4)
"She was appalled by the West Egg, this unprecedented “place” that Broadway had begotten upon a Long Island fishing village. She saw something awful in the very simplicity she failed to understand." p.68

This quote stood out to me because it give a true incite into Daisy character. This quote embodies her as the truly fake person she is. This also helps define the relationship between her and Gatsby, and how it will never work between the two because of who she is and represents. Gatsby has built her up into a fairy tail where she can only disappoint him. Furthermore this proves that Daisy will not be happy with either Tom or Jay because she is unhappy in west egg and unhappy in east egg.
