Chapter 9

1) Chapter 9 (109-121)
2)
The chapter begins with the crime scene investigation of Gatsby's and Wilson's deaths. Nick struggles through the death and attempts to piece together a funeral in honor of Gatsby. While on his hunt he attempts to create a congregation to attend Gatsby's funeral. However, everyone he contacts creates excuses not to attend. Nick  is hurt and feels that he fails Gatsby. When we are introduced to Gatsby's father, Nick is somewhat surprised Gatsby still has family. The father enter and explores Gatsby's home and is impressed by all the material wealth. After Gatsby's funeral, Nick runs into Tom and finds out the whole story of why Wilson killed Gatsby and recognizes that Tom and Daisy are careless and destructive, without remorse.
3)
a) Nick Carraway
b) "...I began to have feeling of defiance, of scornful solidarity between Gatsby and me against them all." (p.110)
c) Nick is a good listener, he reserves judgement, and he often remains the observer, calm on the sidelines. In chapter 9, he shows new colors with his loyalty to Gatsby, determined to give Gatsby a proper memorial. For the first time, he shows emotion in his actions, and judges the rest of his peers and distances himself from their immoral ways.
d)
Nick is the narrator of the novel and objective observer of all that occurs around him. Unfortunately, he gets thrown into the mix of the catastrophe between Gatsby, Daisy, and Tom. As the novel progresses, Nick resents more and more the people he is surrounded by. However, in the end, Nick assumes the roll of Gatsby's only friend. Nick transforms from passively telling the tale to a more self assured character in his decision to separate himself from careless people like Tom and Daisy.
4) "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy-- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money of their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."(p.120)
I thought this quote was significant, because Nick in the beginning reserves all judgements until he truly knows the other perspective. However this quote shows that in the end Nick determines the careless people and in the end distances himself from these disillusioned people. I also thought it was important because it identifies what keeps Tom and Daisy together which is there money.

Chapter 8

1) Chapter 8 (98-108)
2) After not getting any sleep, Nick walks over to Jay's to see what ended up happening. Gatsby say's that he waited outside the Buchanan's house until 4 am, but nothing ended up happening. He explains his past with Daisy and tells nick how he fell in love with Daisy, but when he left for the war Daisy meets Tom and clings to him because he would shape her life immediately. After the accident that killed George's wife, Myrtle, he goes out looking for her murder in panic and finds Tom who sends him Gatsby direction. He arrives to Gatsby mansion, shoots Gatsby and kills himself. Nick comes back to see Gatsby and George dead, and feels pity upon Gatsby because he was already dead inside.
3)
a) “I’m one of these trusting fellas and I don’t think any harm to nobody..."
b)George Wilson: honest, hard worker, poor, Faithful, religious, hopeful, obedient to his wife.
c) When first introduced to George is a quiet, desperate, and hardworking man. His wife is small and stout, and treats George terribly. However, when he finds out that Myrtle is cheating on him he becomes frantic and controlling to the point where he locks her in a room. After the accident he becomes disillusioned by his emotions and seeks out revenge upon Gatsby because he believe it was Gatsby who killed Myrtle.
4) "They're a rotten crowd . . . You're worth the whole damn bunch put together." (p. 105)

This quote stuck out to me because we see Nick's attitude change toward Gatsby once again. He sees that Gatsby strove to achieve the impossible and now admires him for it. Although he envisioned Gatsby to be a man of honor, mystery, and hospitality. Throughout the novel we see Gatsby true colors and his romantic motivation. I think this quote helps piece together the message Fitzgerald was trying to convey through Gatsby, the American dream is an ideal that is never good to the pursuer. Much like Daisy was to Gatsby the "lover" or grail that has never been good to him.

Chapter 7

1) Chapter 7 75-97
2)
Chapter 7 begins with Nick Carraway stopping by to see Gatsby. He stops by because Gatsby is not acting his usual self and that is shown when he doesn't throw his lavish party, and fires of all of his servants. The next day is very hot, and Nick, Jordan, Daisy, Tom and Gatsby all meet together. The decide to goto the city after a small confrontation with Tom and confusion upon which cars to drive. They arrive into the city and get a hotel suite at the Plaza hotel, where the competition over Daisy's love will begin between Tom and Gatsby. As the tension rise, Tom begins to accuse Gatsby for being a fraud, over the fact that he didn't actually goto Oxford, as things become more and more aggressive, and Gatsby accuses Tom that Daisy never loved him. After all the commission ceases Daisy, and Gatsby leave together, and Nick, Jordan, and Tom leave together as well. On their way home Mertyl recognizes Toms car and run into the middle of the street, the swerve and hit Mertyl Wilson however Daisy doesn't stop. When Tom, Nick, and Jordan drive by they stop because they see a crowd of people. Tom recognizes Mertyle and finds out what has happened. Tom has become emotional, and vulnerable at this moment and believes that it was Gatsby who was driving home, and calls him a coward.  Finally they arrive to the Buchanan residences, Nick decides to separate himself from the group and wishes to be alone, as he waits for the cab Tom has called for him he runs into Gatsby who standing outside incase if Tom tries to abuse Daisy. Where Nick gets the full story of how the accident occurred soon after he checks inside to see how Tom and Daisy are doing, he returns without any news or any sight of danger. Nick tells Gatsby to go home, although Gatsby refuses. Nick leaves him be, and goes home himself.
3)
A) Tom Buchanan
B) "...and as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic. His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate, were slipping precipitately from his control." (p.83)
c) Tom is a wealthy man who can provide for the people around him without much struggle. He is very controlling and protective over Daisy, and Mertyle. He is easily angered throughout this chapter because he begins to learn of the affair for Gatsby and Daisy.
D) Toms roll in the novel, is Daisy's husband, Pammy's father, and Mertyle's lover. He is very controlling and its is necessary for him to have the power in his relationships. Yet, when he loses the power he works to win it back by saying all the right things. After learning about Mertyle soon departure with her husband, he gets frustrated and races off to attempt to hold on to Daisy. He somehow makes everyone around him unhappy, as seen with Daisy, who wants to leave him.
4)
"Human sympathy has its limits, and we were content to let all their tragic arguments fade with the city lights behind him." (p.91)
This quote stood out to me because its alluded to this idea from before that anything can happen when crossing that bridge, and the scene between Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby has just concluded, showing that no one expected for that to happen. This quote also stood out to me because Nick shows that he has sympathy for Gatsby and Daisy and Tom, however he doesn't feel so bad for them because he realizes that he doesn't even like them. Later on he says he disliked Gatsby so much by this time, he realizes his cousin isn't honest, and tom is self-centered and controlling. For these reasons Nicks sympathy for the situation is limited.

chapter 6

1) chapter 6 66-74
2) In chapter 6 we learn much more about James Gatz's or Jay Gatsby, past. Jay Gatsby was created when he saw Cody's yacht and decided he wanted the same wealth and life. He met this wealthy man who took interest into Jay, and took him to the west indies. Living with Dan Cody, Jay realized he was a drunk and he always was moving from place to place. When Dan died, he was set to gain his inheritance of 25000 dollars but Ella Kaye took it away from him. Then Jay Gatsby throws another party where Daisy and Tom attend. These east egger's look down upon the west egg society Jay is a part of. Jay is also quick to pick up on the fact that Daisy, wasn't enjoying herself. We get an incite into Daisy, by her description of the actor and director, and how she only enjoys the action not the emotion behind the gesture. Finally while, Nick and Jay are talking, we see Gatsby determination to have things just as they were before, 5 years ago, with loving Daisy.
3)
a) Jay Gatsby
b)"The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself" (p.64)
c)
Gatsby is a man of luxuries and shows off his material wealth. As he develops through the story his character is skewed by his actions of shady business deals, and his never ending love for Daisy. Jay Gatsby is the alter ego of, James Gatz who really was a blue collar american. His obsessive personality leads him to strive for success and wealth in order to win back the women he loves Daisy Buchanan.
d)
Before Jay Gatsby was a mysterious man who we were inclined to like. As the story unfolds and more details are revealed about his motives it becomes clear of his motives of emotion and romantic ideals. In chapter 6 Jay Gatsby roll begins to take a turn. Jay has created all this allusion around him, it has begun to crumble. Reality is setting in after chapter 6 for Jay because he is beginning to realize his love for Daisy, wont work. She doesn't fit into his lifestyle and she doesn't care about his emotions, she only enjoys the chase. However with Jay's obsessive personality he doesn't give up and still determined to make things as they were 5 years ago when he met Daisy.
4)
"She was appalled by the West Egg, this unprecedented “place” that Broadway had begotten upon a Long Island fishing village. She saw something awful in the very simplicity she failed to understand." p.68

This quote stood out to me because it give a true incite into Daisy character. This quote embodies her as the truly fake person she is. This also helps define the relationship between her and Gatsby, and how it will never work between the two because of who she is and represents. Gatsby has built her up into a fairy tail where she can only disappoint him. Furthermore this proves that Daisy will not be happy with either Tom or Jay because she is unhappy in west egg and unhappy in east egg.

Chapter 5

1) Chapter 5, 55-64
2)
The chapter begins with Gatsby arrival to Nick Carraway's house. In the anticipation of Daisy's arrival Gatsby is nervous and anxious to see Daisy. Upon Daisy's arrival too tea, there is an air of awkwardness in the room. Nick doesn't know what to do with himself in his own room, because Gatsby is attempting to talk to Daisy about their past. Nick leaves the room to give them space and goes outside, when he returns he finds them talking and each other are content. Gatsby invites Nick and Daisy to the mansion, where Daisy breaks down over the 'beautiful shirts.' In ending the night, they both forget Nick is in the room with them so he leaves and goes home.
3)
a) Daisy Buchanan
b)"Her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it, bright eyes and a bright passionate mouth, but there was an excitement in her voice that men who had cared for her found difficult to forget: a singing compulsion, a whispered 'Listen,' a promise that she had done gay, exciting things just a while since and that were gay, exciting things hovering in the next hour."
c) Daisy is, wealthy, beautiful, Blue-eyed, puts on airs, kind hearted, Sad inside, and intelligent.
d) Daisy plays the roll of Tom's wife. Although Tom is not a faithful husband Daisy is aware of his affairs, and doesn't confront him about it. In this chapter her roll becomes more dynamic, she is re-introduced to her past lover Jay Gatsby whose is in love with her. While the reader is unaware of what the two discuss in Nick's living room during tea, we see that they have rekindled. Jay invites them over to his house for a tour where Daisy breaks down, over shirts. It is clear that there is another reason that has brought tears to Daisy eyes, which quite possible be because she had made the wrong decision in marrying Tom instead of waiting for Jay. Daisy's roll also becomes more dynamic because Gatsby and Daisy are now infatuated with one another, and Nick leaves the two alone, leaving the rest of the night open ended.
4)“ I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business. Do you mean you’ve been thinking over what I proposed to you the other night?” p.60
This quote stood out to me because both of these business are corrupt. This shows that Gatsby has made quick money in his life, and has a dark side. Although the reader and Nick is still inclined to like him, because of his childish love for Daisy.

Chapter 4

1)Chapter 4 40-53
2)
The chapter begins with Nick, describing the scene outside of Gatsby house, out on the patio there is a crowd of people. ("...an overpopulated lawn.")Then him and Jay go out for a ride, where Gatsby opens up to Nick about his past, background and where he got his money. As he tells his story he alludes to an event where something very tragic in his past. Nick is bothered because Jay wont tell him what the event was, but Jordan baker does. They arrive at a resturante where Jay introduces Nick to Mr. Wolfshein, and Nick introduces Jay into Tom, but Jay leaves almost immediately after the encounter between the two. The scene skips to Jordan and Nick's tea time where they discuss the event of how Jay loves Daisy and whishes to be reunited with her.
3)
a)Meyer Wolfshein,
b)"Meyer Wolfshein? No, hes a gambler... He's the man who fixed the World Series back in 1919."
c)
Meyer Wolfshein, is a small man, with a large head, and tiny eyes. He an emotional man as seen when he recalls the tragedy that occured right outside the resturante. He is also very money conscious and only acknowledges Nick to see if he is the man he is supposedly doing business. He is in the business of gambling, and business for him is good. Since he fixed the World Series.
d)
Meyer Woflshein, helps potray Gatsby in a different light. He has known Jay Gatsby for several years and recalls, the moments when a friend of theirs died by being shot out in the streets as the rest of them sat inside. For Jay Gatsby to associated with anything sinister is shocking, however by association of Meyer Wolfshein persona Mr. Gatsby clearly shows that Jay Gatsby doesn't have the cleanest past.

4)"...she was one of the chambermaids in the Santa Barbara Hotel."
This quote stood out to me, because in the previous chapters I had thought that Tom respected the image of the family and how West Egg people should act. It is clear now that he doesn't actually care about Daisy or, what people think of him. This proven by the fact that his affair is published in the papers. This is a key point and incite into Tom's character.
